The St Andrews Way

St Andrews has many great assets - many within or immediately adjacent to the historic core. We believe that we must draw on the elements that give this core its special qualities and interpret it in a contemporary way in the Western Expansion. Future development must be sympathetic to the special character of the town. The key components that must be reflected include

Burgage Block south of Market Street Example of a vennel - a historic alleyway.

1. The tight burgage block with internal routes: Buildings lining the whole of the outer edge of the block, with a series of narrow streets or vennals leading to smaller hard and soft spaces and secondary buildings within the block.

2. The development of the university town – unique to Cambridge, Oxford and St Andrews, that integrates colleges and quadrangles within mixed use blocks at the heart of the town.

3. The Market Street – a fat irregular street that includes the focus for life and almost becomes a shared surface where pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and bus passengers mingle.

4. A series of linear routes emanating from a key point – the Cathedral – that provide a focus for the town.

5. Landscape in the town – such as the golf links, the beach and Botanics that provide accessible and high quality landscape for residents and visitors.

Much recent development has provided much loved homes for residents and space for university expansion but fails to respond to today’s sustainability agendas. Household density in these areas are around half that of the town centre, and too many people use their cars to get around.

The challenges for further expansion are clear. New homes need to provide excellent accommodation for families and others, be adaptable to change and meet the highest sustainability targets. They need to become part of a successful neighbourhood and linked to the rest of the town.
